Our Story

The Stony Creek Joint Unified School District: A Tapestry of Community and Nature

Nestled in the rugged beauty of northern California, the Stony Creek Joint Unified School District (SCJUSD) is more than just an educational institution—it is the heart of a geographically vast and culturally rich community. The district stretches across approximately 600 square miles, encompassing landscapes that transition from the flat expanses of the Sacramento Valley to the rugged summit of the Coast Range. Nearly half of this area lies within the breathtaking boundaries of the Mendocino National Forest, offering students and staff a daily backdrop of natural splendor.

A Unique Blend of Heritage and Diversity

The Stony Creek district serves a unique and diverse population. Its boundaries include Grindstone Rancheria, home to members of the Nomlaki, Pomo, and Wintun tribes, whose rich cultural heritages contribute to the district's unique identity. Students from Grindstone Rancheria bring their traditions, stories, and perspectives to the classroom, enriching the school community's cultural fabric.

In addition to its Native American students, the district serves families from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. These include children from inter-district transfers in Glenn and Colusa Counties, ranching and logging families who have worked the land for generations, and students from well-established Elk Creek, Chrome, and Stonyford families. Together, they form a vibrant school community bound by shared values of resilience, hard work, and a commitment to education.

A Rural District with a Big Heart

Despite its vast geographic area, SCJUSD operates like a close-knit family. With a small but dedicated team of educators and support staff, the district places a strong emphasis on building relationships and fostering a sense of belonging for every student. Many of the staff have deep roots in the region and bring a personal passion for the success of the community's youth. Staff members work tirelessly to ensure students are greeted warmly, cared for, and provided a safe and clean environment in which to learn and grow.

A Hub of Education and Opportunity

The district’s schools serve as community hubs, providing not only education but also a gathering place for families across the region. Initiatives such as Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are helping to create a positive and inclusive environment for students, while programs in educational technology ensure that even students in this rural district have access to modern learning tools and opportunities.

Athletics also play an important role in the district, with leaders working to promote teamwork, perseverance, and school spirit. The small size of the district fosters close bonds between students, coaches, and community members, creating a supportive environment where every player feels like a star.

Rooted in Nature, Connected to the World

The Mendocino National Forest and the surrounding natural environment are integral to the district’s identity. Field trips, outdoor activities, and place-based learning help students develop an appreciation for the natural world. At the same time, the district’s commitment to modern educational practices ensures that its students are prepared to connect with the wider world and pursue their dreams.

A Community Committed to Growth

Stony Creek Joint Unified School District is more than a rural district; it is a community that celebrates its history, embraces its diversity, and looks forward to the future. From the grinding mills of Grindstone Rancheria to the rolling ranchlands of Stonyford, every part of this district contributes to its story. With dedicated staff, supportive families, and a student body full of potential, SCJUSD is a shining example of what can be achieved when a community comes together to support its youth.
